I'm 29 years old, was a 2 sport college athlete. Currently have 2 kids, work as a nurse, not much strenuous physical activity. ANYWAYS. For about a few months now, I will be walking and out of no where, I get a sharp, shooting pain on the top of my foot(more lateral than medial) near where my foot connects to my ankle. I could literally fall to my knees when it happens. Then I usually end up limping and walking flat-footed and it'll eventually go away after minutes or a few hours. Now, sometimes this happens multiple times a day. Other times, it won't happen for weeks. And I'll be feeling completely normal. As of lately it's been happening more and more frequently. No significant injury noted. No swelling or bruising. Slight tenderness upon touch. I had an xray taken today, everything looked "fine". I go in for an MRI next week. Any thoughts on what could be going on? Why so intermittent? Will the MRI show anything if I'm not having any symptoms currently?

Certainly is odd and fits no pattern! Unfortunately, it is most likely one of those things that just monitor and see how it develops. Often in cases like this other symptoms develop and it becomes more obvious what it is.

As you have the MRI scheduled, thats good.

All I can suggest at this stage is get to a physical therapist and get it mobilized and get started on an exercise program.

It is good that you have taken an appointment for the MRI. I would suggest that along with this medical checkup you can also visit a certified physical therapist. They offer effective physical therapy exercises, which do wonders for aches and pains. Last year, I had pain in my ankle and couldn’t get anything in X-rays. Finally, I visited a physical therapy center and they helped me relieve my pain. Now, I am pain-free.
