I am a 65 year old woman with a history of scoliosis spinal surgeries. I was diagnosed on March 12th with a 5th metatarsal spiral fracture, mid-shaft, of my left foot. I am unable to wear a cam walker boot due to the heavy weight and am instead in a cast. I stayed immobile for six weeks in bed, not walking. I went back and my x-rays had not changed, the fracture is still non-union. I was recasted on April 23 and am still in that cast. The fracture is not displaced.

Since then I have had a consult with an orthopedic surgeon who is a foot and ankle specialist. He examined my x-rays and informed me this is a fracture he sees and treats these fractures all the time, and that it is a Zone 3 dancer’s fracture. The orthopedist told me that even though the x-rays have not changed I should not be in a cast anymore, and that being immobilized in a cast at this point is inhibiting healing. He said I should be in a post-op shoe and starting to walk to speed healing. My podiatrist disagrees with the orthopedist’s diagnosis and wants me to stay in the cast.

So I am receiving conflicting information. Should my foot have healed by now in the cast? Would I be better off getting out of the cast and moving on the foot? I am due to return on May 21st (which is Week 10 in my cast) to my podiatrist to get x-rays and hopefully get my cast removed. But I would just as soon get the cast off now and get into a post-op shoe.

This is not my first fracture. In 2014, I had a 5th metatarsal fracture of my right foot also spiral mid-shaft, and that was a really bad fracture that was displaced. I healed without surgery. I am very concerned that this time, I am taking so long to heal even though I was told it is a much less serious fracture. I am now almost nine weeks in the cast. I am very concerned about the slow healing process.

I would appreciate people’s thoughts and advice on this.

Really hard to say without seeing it and knowing much more.
    Perhaps get another expert opinion?
