i have arthritis in both big toes also a piece of bone floating in both probably a bone spur that broke off. My right one gets pretty painful but not all the time. It is bone on bone and has bone spurs. The foot surgeon suggested fusion saying it would get rid of the pain, it’s done all the time and I would be able to do about everything still. I am a golfer and also work on my feet plus in a rock band. I do not want it to effect my lifestyle so not sure about the whole fusion thing. Anyone out there have any good or bad experiences with big toe fusion?

Have you tried rigid shoes or rocker tip shoes like clogs or the Hoka running shoes. If it hurts when you try to bend the toe, a shoe that prevents the toe from bending can help. These shoes might be helpful after the operation as well. Some have liked the carbon fiber plate that makes the shoe more rigid. These kinds of things can keep the pain down so you can occasionally wear regular shoes like golf shoes without it hurting too much.
