I am 43 years old, live in Canada. I was born with a club foot, (left side) had three seperate surgeries and several castings and bracings in between. I have managed rather well through life as far as dealing with the lack of mobility in the foot and the fact that it is 2 sizes smaller and my leg is 3/4 inch shorter on that side as well. Recently in the past year, I have noticed swelling every night around my ankle and have developed arthitis in my foot, knee and hip on my right side. I have developed more additional weakness and have trouble walking now. I used to be very active and compensated very well for this condition. I have had orthodics, but now the Orthodist has recommended a fusion on the ankle or a brace to prevent any more movement of the foot. He wants to completely immobilize my foot to stop further damage to the cartilage and bones. I decided to go for the brace at his point, so I can at least remove it is I have to wear certain shoes or boots. I also curl at a compettitive level and don't want to stop that, I need my foot for this, are there other alternatives and will wearing the brace 90% of the time help for times when I am not wearing it? Is this problem inevitably going to get worse?

I'm 15, and I've got bilateral club feet. I've had 5 surgeries on each foot now, plus castings. I also wear braces all the time (except for at night, I started refusing to wear my night braces when I was six or seven). Yah, I think pain is just something that comes with clubfoot. Despite all my surgeries, I'm still in tons of pain, but I just ignore it. Sometimes I can't though, that's when I get the muscle spasms, and I have to use my crutches to help me walk.

I don't think there's really much of an alternative to the braces, but then again, I never asked, I've always worn braces (or casts), so it would feel weird if I went around for a day with something else.
