Hello I had a long oblique fracture of the fifth metatarsal 5 months ago. Displaced but not enough to require immediate surgery. It was treated with a hard soled boot, and I was told it was "healing slowly." It has not healed, now has a fibrous union and some very small bony bridges.
I can walk and run somewhat on the foot. I feel a little pain after running, but nothing urgent. One doc I have consulted recommends surgery, another doc says not really necessary unless it's hurting. But I am concerned as to how long I can live with this, or is it going to just fracture again. Or, will the bony bridges break?

I feel like if I am to get the surgery, better to get it sooner than later. However, how do I really know if it's necessary?

    Hi,

I had a Jones fracture of the 5th metatarsal playing football.
Very Minimal Displacement and Similar treatment to you.

After 6 weeks I was told I had partial union, after 10 weeks I've been told I have fibrous non-union.

Very little pain through out in fact I'd say no pain at all in the last ~3 weeks.

I've been advised it should be fine, and I should even be able to play football again.

    How did yours go ?
Is playing footy with a fibrous non-union of the 5th metatarsal a possibility ?

Should I ask for another xray in say 2-3 months.

I wouldn't want an operation now if this is the way to go as its the start of the summer.
I'd rather enjoying spending summer with the kids and cycling, if I had to think about surgery it would be over winter ie 3 months away.
