I used to have this not only on my two big toes, but also on 4 knuckles of my right hands. They itched like hell and i used to sratch them on anything till they became callus, blackened, and I peeled them off. But after sometimes the itch returned on the exact same place and the cycle continued.

Believe it or not, they are now gone. I was so mad with the itch, I burned the spots using small fire. But behold, once they recovered, the itch never came back.
Unfortunately the burnt left permanent mark thou.

    Try at your own risk.

I also have an intermittent, intense itc..h on my left big toe. I have also had a lot of pain on the right side of my toenail on the same toe. And, yes, it drives me crazy!!!!
The response to our problem is just as I had assumed............inexplainable............

Hi Sorry didn't post properly. My itchy toe has been driving me crazy for three days. This happens on occasion for as long as I can remember. When you said eczema I thought to wash my toe with hot water and neutrogena tar shampoo. I am now feeling some relief. I think that what people say about allergies makes sense. I have recently been using a really cheap shampoo that has more chemicals in it because I was too broke to buy my expensive natural shampoo and it has brought on possibly this itchy toe thing. My ex had jock itch and when I switched over to 100% natural laundry soap with no additives or fragrance it completely went away for him.
If it starts itching again tonight I'm going to try and antifungal as well. I also took some Tylenol.

I have had the same problem, only at night. I have been soaking my feet for 20 - 30 minutes in a bowl of Epsom salts followed by johnsons baby moisturising cream. The problem went but had come back as I have been ill was not able to do this. But will start again soon. Try it. Good luck

I suffer with itchy toe. Right foot ball always itchy. I do not notice much because I'm very busy at work during the day, but at night itching me crazy. Berber rugs, hair brushes, pen caps, table edges, spiral notebooks are objects that I can use to help relieve itching.

I simply have to respond to this page!!! I started off on my search "why does my big toe itch?" I am so shocked that there are so many of us that have the same problem! I have so many chronic undiagnosed conditions that I cant direct my itchy toe to anything, One thing that is consistent is that I ate something. And it starts to itch. Could be sweets, or ... I always thought it was an allergy. but why the BIG TOE!! I am so sorry for those of you that have it so bad that you want to cut it off.. I would go see an allergist 1st, good luck at the Doctors office. I swear the doctors office is a place to talk about your problems. they don't know why your toe itches either!

I see a lot of people have a itchy toe problem but none seem to be exactly in the same spot as mine. Mine is one my left toe in the creavis of my toe nail bed. Its itches so bad I could claw the nail off. If I cut my nail off to clean out from under it to see if there is anything there it itches where I cut it too. There's no redness, no blisters no infections. My toe nail does have a little bit of a yellowish tint and my nails are flaky. It seems to only itch when I get out of a hot warm shower. In ways it sounds like athletes foot but it can't be because my feet don't itch the insides of my toes don't itch nothing just the inside of my left toenail bed. Ugh help!

Hi, I'm new to this, but one thing I've noticed is not many add their age, and that is important because of the body's ability to heal. I'm a 63 year old male in pretty good health. Two weeks ago I went into a river wearing leather sandals. I wore the sandals for a few hours with the wet leather rubbing against my feet, especially the joint on my right big toe. The next day it was red and swollen. Since then it has been very itchy and hurts when I press it. I've tried soaking my feet in a 50% water, 50% vinegar solution, but it made it worse. I've also tried fungus stuff, and that didn't help either. I've squeezed it and only water comes out but no poison. I've read that it could be gout but I lead a pretty healthy lifestyle and watch what I eat. It also could be rheumatism, but why just one joint and not all the others and why just after I went into the river? So three days ago I put some "maximum strength CORTAID," a hydrocortisone anti itch ointment, on and put a band aid over it. I saw that one reader had recommended that. It stopped the itching immediately. Since then I have changed the band aid once and added more cream. I'm still getting good results. Not sure of the long term, but I'm encouraged so far. Hope this helps others with similar problem and I definitely hope that this is not a long term problem.

I have the exact same problem. My big toe on my left leg itches so bad sometimes, that I actually cry. Scratching just makes it worse. The one thing that absolutely helps me the most is ice water. I soak my foot in the ice water and the itching goes away. That's the only thing that has helped me.
