I broke my foot in September. The urgent care PA diagnosed it as an avulsion fracture, gave me a walking boot and said to wear it for 6 weeks, full weight-bearing. At week 5, I was still in a lot of pain and went to a podiatrist. He said I was originally misdiagnosed and this is a Jones fracture. He put me in a cast and on crutches, no weight bearing at all.

I'm now in my third cast for a total of 5 weeks in a hard cast - and I'm still in a fair amount of pain. It isn't debilitating but it is painful enough to be very distracting and sometimes makes it hard to sleep. I believe my doctor is rather conservative and is trying to avoid surgery, which I appreciate. (Both because I don't subscribe to the "cut first, ask questions later" method of medicine and because I don't have insurance right now.) But I think that will be an option on the table if I don't improve by the next meeting. (Note: I'm very comfortable with my doctor and his level of expertise. My other half doesn't understand why this still hurts and hasn't healed after 10 weeks and wants me to see someone else. I don't see the point just yet. I trust this guy.)

If you've had a Jones fracture, for how long did it hurt? I'm 10 weeks in and that seems excessive. Did you end up having surgery? If so, do you remember ballpark costs (before insurance)? I know that will vary widely by geographic area but I'm curious if I'm looking at $3,000 or $13,000. Frankly either is fine if my foot doesn't hurt afterwards. Constant pain is tiring. I'm not a pleasant person sometimes lately.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts/experience! If any experts are on the board, I'd love to hear from them too.

And Happy Thanksgiving, if you're in the U.S.!

I suffered a Jones fracture last Friday - one week ago. I had no swelling, but at the time quite a bit of pain - cold not bear weight at all. I went to our ER - and was told to come back in mornng - as it was after 10:00 p.m. when I did this. Went next morning - they took x-rays - doctor on duty said it was Jones fracture. Put me in plaster cast - all has been well. I have not had any pain - and I can put some heel eight and toe weight - in sitting position - with no pain as of yesterday - not quite a week.

So -... from reading on here - it is very obvious that the way in which these fractures are treated - varies greatly. Also - it is obvious that the patients symptoms vary greatly as well. Some suffer with pain and don't heal - others do...very strange. However - I would like to add that I am going on ER Doctor opinion only - I see an ortho surgeon on Dec 8 - who knows - maybe he will say this isn't a jones? I did look at the x-ray and I do think the break is down toward the baby toe a bit too far to be a "classic" Jones. And - another important factor - the bone was not completely broken - only about 3/4 way through -so maybe that has helped?

I have been taking a cocktail of amino acids for over 2 years , high doses of vitamin c and lysine - as well as Vitamin D and I drink Omega 3 oil every day.... perhaps this has helped?

Lastly - has anyone seen the freedom leg brace - because crutches SUCK - so I am looking into getting one of these - it is a hands-free leg crutch - it off-loads all weight to your thigh - and you walk normally - and can do stairs. I can send link if anyone is interested.

    Holly,
Thanks for the reply! I'm glad you haven't been in much pain. I'm jealous. I'm almost 3 months in now and people (including my other half) keep asking why it still hurts at this point. I'm starting to feel a little crazy, but I don't typically complain about pain so I figure it must be significant.

I'm not familiar with the crutch you mention. Link?

    Thanks!

Also if you've had a Jones fracture, did it ever heal enough to feel "normal"? I'm afraid the pain I have now is the new "normal". That would be really bad. I'm a runner and don't see much in the way of long distance in my future it this pain continues.

    Thanks!

I had Jones fracture 4 years ago, tremendously painful, actually vomited when it happened. Ortho put me in hard cast, 1st month- no healing. He prescribed an Exogen bone stimulator (ultrasonic). I elected to have a screw put in as well. Out of cast and fully functional by end of next four months (5 months total). The screw gives me problems sometimes, bu nothing major (Granddaughter steps on it a lot). Good luck!

I was in a hard cast until Friday, when the cast came off for an MRI. I'm waiting to get the results next week but will probably get a hard cast again. This makes 3 months since I broke my foot. I'm tired of the cast and crutches but I'm even more tired of the pain. It seems slightly better this week, but not much. My foot definitely doesn't like the boot - it's not tight enough. Hopefully I'll get some answers from the MRI and I can start making some progress...

  7. Jones Fracture

I tripped and hurt my foot a little over a month ago. I went to the ER after elevating and ice didn't help the pain, and I was told I broke my 5th metatarsal and referred to a orthopedic specialist. I was there the next day, and the x-ray confirmed that it was actually a Jones Fracture. The doctor recommended bone-health vitamins you can buy over the counter and put me in a cam boot that can inflate. He told me no weight bearing. I used a wheelchair and crutches for 1 month and went back to the doctor 2 days ago. Was told that the break is healing and told that I can start to bear some weight on that food as long as I wear the boot too and as long as I don't overdo it. It has been two days and so far so good! I go back in three weeks when I expect to be completely healed- no boot hopefully. I will be happy when all is back to normal and I can drive again but right now I am just thankful I am able to walk. The doctor told me that what happened to me was the best possible scenario.

I have been dealing with a Jones Fx since October 7, 2011. Had Surgery with screw placement on Oct 26th because it seems that is the best way for it to heal. You could have a cast for 12 weeks with no screw and risk it never healing or take the cast off walk on it and the chance is there that it could fracture again because it is not stable. It is now Jan 4th but with follow up x-rays I know it is healing. Just a long road.
