Lisfranc fracture - bone chip

Two months ago my foot was stepped on and semi-crushed. I was wearing flip-flops and the man that stepped on me was wearing shoes. He stepped back with his heal and put all his weight down on the top of my foot. Needless to say there was severe swelling and bruising.

I didn't go to the Dr. right away, thinking it would heal itself. Not a good idea. I went to the Dr. two days ago and he said I had a form of Lisfranc fracture. Apparently the ligament has torn itself away from the bone and taken a chunk of bone with it. I was able to see the bone chip in the x-ray.

The Dr. said if I had come in directly after the accident, I would have had surgery to place pins and fuse the joints together. Then he told me that since it happened two months ago, that he wouldn't do anything for it. Since I went to see the Dr. my foot has been extremely painful and swollen. I'm sure it has to do with the Dr. having to manipulate my foot to examine it, but I'm worried that the bone chip might shift at times and cause further problems. My question is this...is it safe to have a bone chip "hanging out" in my foot?
