On Sept 9th 2012 I fractured my foot and went to ER. They put me in a short walking boot and told me to follow up in one week with an orthopedic surgeon to see how it was healing. When I went to the surgeon he told me that it was a Jones fracture and that he hadn't had good results getting them to heal without surgery. He said that was especially true given my activity level and he recommended doing a ORIF with a single screw to stabilize it. On the 17th they did the surgery and I was told to come back in one week for a follow up. At that appoint x-rays were done and the surgeon told me that the plan was for four weeks of no weight, then four weeks of partial weight followed by walking on it with a boot. That surgeon was leaving the practice and when I came back for my next appointment (4 weeks when I thought I'd be going to partial weight) the doctor that took over my case told me that he wasn't seeing a lot of bone growth and we needed to go for three more weeks with no weight but after that I'd be able to put partial weight on it. So I went back three weeks later, again x-rays were taken and I was told the exact same thing. This same thing has happened every three weeks and now I'm 12 1/2 weeks out from surgery and still not bearing any weight. Today I went to see a podiatrist to get a second opinion. The podiatrist looked at the x-rays and told me that in his opinion didn't think that the fracture would heal. He is recommending a revision surgery.

The reason the podiatrist says the original surgery needs to be revised is because there is about a 4mm gap where the fracture occurred. He is telling me that the orthopedic surgeon should have reduced that gap so that the bones were touching before he put the screw in place. Then he says that there would only be a very small area for the the bone to have to fill in and not a 4mm gap to try and bridge. Does this sound reasonable? Should the gap have been reduced down to the bones touching in the original surgery? If the revision surgery is necessary I want to do it so I can get started on the healing process but I don't want to start over from the beginning again if it's not needed.

I've had a bone stimulator and have been using it for about 2 1/2 weeks but I found out today that I wasn't positioning it in the correct position so I may have had little if any benefit from using it so far. The podiatrist tells me that on a gap that large that it's too big for the bone stimulator to help with anyway.

Thanks for any help, advice or opinions that any of you can provide. I'm caring for three young children (ages 6 months - 4 years) during the day while my wife works. It's been nearly impossible to do for the last three months on crutches so I've got to figure out what the best approach is to get this healed and get back on my feet.
