First off, I'm not a native English speaker, but there is no 'Foot healt forum' in my own language, so please forgive me if I make mistakes ;)

Last April I first got an ingown toenail on my left big toe after not cutting my toenails right. When baths of baking soda in warm water didn't work my GP put a wad of cotton wool under it but it didn't help. I went to the hospital where the surgeon removed the edge of the nail growing into the flesh (and also the inflamed flesh) and also cut the root of the nail out.
After this my toe recovered and looked like normal again accept the nail was a bit smaller. Then 1 or 2 months after the toenail on the right side of my right big toe grew into the flesh again and it got inflamed. Got the same surgery again in the hospital and all healed. Then, a couple of weeks after that surgery BOTH the right side of my left toe and the left side of my right toe got inflamed (the sides that I did not have surgery on!). Had surgery again, the surgeon did both sides at the same time, well oke after eachother but in the same half hour, she figured I could handle this since I'm quite an expert in this surgery. This healed too, finally I thought I was done with everything but then the left side of my left toe (the first surgery) got inflamed again because apparently the root of the nail wasn't thouroughly removed, so it started growing again and grew into the flesh that was now in it's place. Surgeon did the same surgery again but now used this chemical substance which kills all the cells in the nailroot (don't know how to explain this really) so it would never grown back again. After the surgery I asked the surgeon: sooo this can never return right? And he told me, no it can't. Guess what? It did, that same side is now inflamed AGAIN. What am I doing wrong here? I pay attention when cutting my toenails, don't wear tight shoes, in fact all I wore after the last surgery were loose Uggs. I shower with a plastic bag around my foot tied with a rubber band so no shampoo or some will come on my inflamed toe (of course I wash it after my shower by taking the showerhead of it's standard and spraying my toe with it. I wear a band-aid over it every night and clean my toe before I go to bed, oh and I put 'sterilon' (to make your skins sterile, kills bacteria has Chlorhexidine in it) on the toe before I wrap it in the band-aid, which seems to help a bit.

Please help me! What is wrong with my toes? I really want to wear normal shoes again, this is been going on for months now :(

Nail destruction surgeries, even when properly performed, do not always work, and serial failures are not unheard of. That being said, I do not know how competently the surgeries were performed in the first place.

i got my toenail removed after going through the same procedures as both of you and guess what, I thought it wouldn't get inflamed again but after 5 months, when my toenail started growing out again, my toe got sore and both sides started to hurt. There was even puss coming out, from both sides. I really don't know what to do I even searched it up and I found out that removing your toenail can cause chronic ingrown nail problems ugh.
