Ok first thank you for your post. I'm dying here. No new shoes, so we can start there. About 6 months ago my left two little toes felt like someone was stabbing them with ice picks. The pain came from out of nowhere. I couldn't rub the pain away, and the more I walked the worse it got.
Barefooted or in flip flops, shoes and socks nothing will stop it. And it comes from nowhere. I can go for months and nothing. But when it flares up I'm at a stand still dying. I started working on my feet again and no sooner do I get to work that I want to break down and cry. I'm miserable.
No bumbs, no redness, and they aren't jammed into shoes. It comes out of nowhere. I would love to find out what causes this. It's so painful.

I'm 60, an RN, excellent health, never smoked and woke up with annoying pain in the tips of my last 2 toes, right foot. It's stabbing, intermittent and continues during the day. This thread has been helpful to know that I'm not crazy because I'm not diabetic and don't think it's gout. I did walk 10 miles at Disneyland a couple of days ago and did eat a lot of pineapple which I read has been a possible source in someone else. I think I'll "sit on it" for a couple more days before I call my doctor. Thank you all for your informative input.

thank goodness this forum may have answered my problem. Starting having shooting intermediate pain in big toe two days ago and have been trying to figure out what it is as with all of you, no redness etc just pain from inside to out. I do have lower back arthritis and scoliosis. There are a few things that may have caused the problem. Had a great two hour massage, may have irritated back, and next day I started treadmill at local gym, lots of walking, it was after that that I noticed my toe was feeling a bit funny so I removed my shoe. That night in bed it started big time. This is only the second day but I do believe that it is nerve damage, either the massage or the shoe rubbing on the toe. At any rate I will be observing it for a while before I see my MD. Thanks for all the information it gives me a lot to think about.

I have found that my issue is referred pain from severe bone on bone arthritis. I was told my best option was joint replacement but that only lasts a few years. I have googled around and am presently trying a product called Correct Toes which is sold by a podiatrist in Oregon. Has anyone heard of or had luck with this product?

I just started having a shooting pain in the tip of my left two toes. I've recently had my blood tested so I know my sugar levels are perfect. I've been a runner since junior high (about 35 years) so I'm wondering if that may have something to do with it. Is anyone else a runner having this problem?

I have had this experience a few months ago and I tried the micro-circulation treatment. It gave me so much comfort after a few days of using it.

I noticed it 6 months ago but went away. Now its back. I lost my nail over a year ago and came back in nasty. No pain though no infection. Did you have damage at all to yours. How you describe is just like me. Did you find answers. Do you get pedis?

I've been having the same issue for quite a few years. I do have peripheral neuropathy. My problem only occurs while sleeping on my back for an extended period. Rolling over on my side typically gets the pain to stop within a few minutes.

I have had this excruciating pain in left 2,3,4th toes since i was a teenager. then it was only when i wore high heeled boots. i am :double jointed" so i would take boot off and stand and flex toes backwards to get them to pop the joints. then it would go away. now Im 60 and this year started having same nerve jolting pain in right toes as well, it wakes me up at night. I dont wear any heeled shoes, have had lower back surgery, and have arthritis. so I thought maybe arthritis..but it wasnt that when i was a kid? i cant find any diagnosis that fits. it comes and goes with no warning. locks up like a spasm ,barely can walk/hobble to bathroom to get some gel on them asap. its even started in back in heel area. I have prescription for Voltaren gel and it works pretty well , but I want to find the cause to make it stop. this is crazy everyday occurrence now. its not gout, and i dont take b12 - maybe i should, or I was taking magnesium tablets - maybe that would help? when i was a kid it was only the closed in shoes made then hurt. now they hurt in middle of night primarily, even if I havent walked around that day much. the heel pain could be too flat shoes, esp if I babysit at sons house with hardwood floors im not used to, so im wearing sandal with small elevation to heel for support- but still get the toe pain all day when im on my feet with grandkids. ACK! its driving me crazy! this gel isnt cheap either with medicare insurance..but it does work well fyi- anti-inflammatory - not lidocain gel though. idk whats in it. .

i had toe pain/spasms and back problems since i was 20. i had lower back surgery-replaced last 3 discs, fusion surgery in 2010. I still have back issues. the sciatica is gone, but the metal in lower back hurts now every time weather changes. no joke. pain killers 4x day. so i got rid of really bad sciatica, but still have back pain 24x7. but meds help me be semi functional. (back pain isnt the same nerve pain like before) I still have toe pains waking me up in middle of the night though!
